In Greek mythology, the Sirens (Greek singular: Σειρήν Seirēn; Greek plural: Σειρῆνες Seirēnes) were dangerous creatures, portrayed as femme fatales who lured nearby sailors with their enchanting music and voices to shipwreck on the rocky coast of their island. Roman poets placed them on some small islands called Sirenum scopuli. In some later, rationalized traditions, the literal geography of the "flowery" island of Anthemoessa, or Anthemusa, is fixed: sometimes on Cape Pelorum and at others in the islands known as the Sirenuse, near Paestum, or in Capreae. All such locations were surrounded by cliffs and rocks.
When the Sirens were given a name of their own they were considered the daughters of the river god Achelous, fathered upon Terpsichore, Melpomene, Sterope, or Chthon (the Earth; in Euripides' Helen 167, Helen in her anguish calls upon "Winged maidens, daughters of the Earth"). Although they lured mariners, for the Greeks the Sirens in their "meadow starred with flowers" were not sea deities. Roman writers linked the Sirens more closely to the sea, as daughters of Phorcys. Sirens are found in many Greek stories, particularly in Homer's The Iliad.

The Sirens of Greek mythology are sometimes portrayed in later folklore as fully aquatic and mermaid-like; the fact that in Spanish, French, Italian, Polish, Romanian and Portuguese the word for mermaid is respectively Sirena, Sirène, Sirena, Syrena, Sirenă and Sereia, and that in biology the Sirenia comprise an order of fully aquatic mammals that includes the dugong and manatee, add to the visual confusion, so that Sirens are even represented as mermaids.

En la mitología Griega, las Sirenas (Del griego en singular: Σειρήν Seirēn; en griego en plural: Σειρῆνες Seirēnes) eran peligrosas criaturas, retratadas como femme fatales que atraían a los marineros cercanos con su música y voz encantadoras para que encallaran en las costas rocosas de sus islas. Los poetas romanos las colocan en algunas pequeñas islas llamadas Sirenum scopuli. Un poco más tarde, tradiciones racionalizadas, la geografía literal de la isla floral de Anthemoessa, o Anthemusa, es arreglada: algunas veces está en Punta del Faro y otras veces en las islas conocidas como las Islas de Li Galli, cerca de Paestum, o en la Isla de Capri. Todas estas localizaciones estas rodeadas por acantilados y rocas.
Cuando a las sirenas les dieron un nombre propio ellas eran consideradas hijas del dios del río Aqueloo, padre de Terpsichore, Melpomeme, Sterope, o Chthon (la Tierra; en la obra Helena de Eurípides, Helena llama en sus angustiados gritos a "las doncellas aladas, hijas de la Tierra"). A pesar de atraer a marineros, para los Griegos las Sirenas en sus "praderas rodeadas de flores " no eran deidades marinas. Los escritores romanos unían más aún a las Sirenas al mar, como hijas de Forcis. Las sirenas son encontradas en muchas historias griegas, particularmente en la Iliada de Homero.

Las sirenas de la mitología griega son algunas veces retratadas en un folclore tardío como totalmente acuáticas y con forma de pez, el hecho es que en Español, Francés, Italiano, Polaco, Rumano y Portugues, la palabra "Sirena" es respectivamente Sirena, Sirène, Sirena, Syrena, Sirenă y Sereia, y en biología los Sirénidos abarca un conjunto de mamíferos totalmente acuáticos entre los que se incluyen los dugongs y los manatíes, añadiendo estó como confusión visual, así que las Sirenas son incluso representadas como peces.
